Miles of Pillowcase Smiles
ConKerr Cancer will provide miles of pillowcase smiles across the country from September 13th through 19th, 2010. As September is Pediatric Cancer month, we have chosen this time to bring as many smiles to as many sick children as possible, and to tell you about the work ConKerr Cancer does every single day.
ConKerr Cancer started when Cindy Kerr’s son was diagnosed with cancer in 2002 and she began making pillowcases to brighten up his hospital room and to put a smile on his face. He loved it and so she began making pillowcases for other children on the Oncology Unit at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Since then the pillowcase project, A Case for Smiles, has grown in amazing ways. Hundreds of thousands of pillowcases have been provided to sick children from across North America and in South Africa. School groups, sewing circles, religious groups and fabric stores have all pitched in and are making pillowcases for the kids.
When you read some of our thank-yous, you will learn that ConKerr Cancer does more than bring a pillowcase to a sick child. Just ask any volunteer who has been forever changed, any parent who has smiled through their tears as their child selected a pillowcase, any sibling who has worked on a pillowcase for “my brudder, “ and most importantly, for every sick child who was given a reason to smile.
